“I Don’t Bray!!”

I watched “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” for the first time in about 10 years. What a great film. I believe I appreciate it even more now. At the time of it’s release it was such a controversial film due to the language and subject matter. By today’s standards it would be considered mild, but it was this film and “Blow Up” that brought about the MPAA ratings. Yet even though the content is not shocking today, I still get a little freaked out hearing the fabulous Liz Taylor yell out “god damn” and throw down booze and insults like a fierce drag queen. I’m not sure why, but when I see an older film I seem to view it as if I was watching in the era it was made. I think this gives it more impact for some reason and it is especially true for “Virginia Woolf.”

The whole cast was incredible but it is Liz that folks remember most. She was never better, that is for sure. But Richard Burton matched her barb for barb and even though considered the quiet one, he is truly the one in control. It is a masterful performance. And Sandy Dennis is just a total freak throughout and plays it to perfection.

It ain’t an easy film to watch and even though there are lines that can bring about some uncomfortable laughs, by the end you can be emotionally spent. I think the older I get the more I understand the characters and their lives. It really is devastating and oddly enough makes me appreciate how my life is going in comparison. They just don’t make impeccable adult films like this any more, which is really sad. So if you want to see one of the great films of the era, I highly suggest watching “Virginia Woolf.”

Martha: I hope that was an empty bottle, George! You can't afford to waste good liquor, not on YOUR salary!
