A Blip of a Movie Review: “The Social Network”

Alternate Title: “Geeks Gone Wild”

Short Plot: Harvard computer geek gets dumped by his girlfriend, takes out his anger in his blog, creates a who’s hotter website that crashes Harvard’s systems, gets idea for a new website from two snobby rich twins, develops the dang thing and it explodes across the world and billions of dollars are at stake.

Pros: If this really is the “true” story of Facebook (or something close) it is a pretty amazing story, the lead role was made for Jesse Eisenberg, showcases greed in a new and different way – sometimes not even motivated by money, excellent direction by David Fincher, Justin Timberlake really can act, and it is probably one of the best films of the year.

Cons: The time line shifting may put off some folks (but I thought it was well done), how easy these twerps fall into money will make you wanna vomit, will make you feel totally stupid when they jibber jabber about computer stuff and you don’t know whether to like Mark Zuckerberg or smack the sh*t out of him (probably both).

Verdict: Excellent film. It is getting universal praise from critics and it seems to be a hit at the box office. However, although it might get Oscar nods I don’t think it will be in the envelope as a winner. I believe there are some Oscar bait movies coming out this fall that will most likely keep it as a nominee. Regardless, the story of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg is fascinating and the work of director Fincher and writer Aaron Sorkin is top notch. If you are on Facebook and use it, you should see this movie and marvel at how it all got started.
